"Can I go on the iPad?"
How many times have you heard that today? It isn't a discipline problem. It's the lack of a better option to hand. When the only answer you've got is "no, you can't", the screen wins every time.
You don't have to invent a new game every day
After work, dinner and the washing-up, nobody has the energy to dream up activities from scratch. It's not you. It's been a long day. The inventing part? Already done for you.

CoordinationSock Basketball
The washing basket becomes the hoop and every score unlocks the next level, one step further back: how far can your child go?
What you'll need
How to play
- 1Roll 5 pairs of socks into balls and stand the washing basket against the wall.
- 2Mark level 1 on the floor with masking tape or a slipper, two steps from the basket.
- 3Scored 3 balls from level 1? One step back: level 2.
- 4Missed all 5 in a round? Back you go a level.
- 5The match ends at level 5, right across the room; write the record on a piece of paper on the wall for them to beat tomorrow.
What it builds
Trains aim, just-the-right-amount-of-strength and persistence: each level is a little harder, and your child learns to miss, adjust and go again without giving up.
Tip for parents
The secret to a long stretch of solo play is the record on the wall: children play far more to beat themselves than to beat anyone else. A tightly rolled sock flies much straighter.
Variations
Easier: a bigger basket and levels closer in. Harder: shooting backwards or under a leg. With siblings: a basket each and a combined family record.
"But I can find this free online..."
You can. After twenty minutes scrolling through blogs and videos, with your child tugging at your sleeve. Here it's already done: organised, filtered by age and time, with tried-and-tested steps. You open it and play.
